Privacy Policy
What we collect, why, and what your options are.
Last updated 5 November 2026This Privacy Policy describes the personal data processed by Ground Plane Studio, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company ("Nearglass," "we," "us") in connection with the website at nearglass.com and the live demos at demo.nearglass.com and nanorc.nearglass.com (the "Service"). It applies to information you give us directly and to information we collect automatically when you interact with the Service. The demos also have a shorter privacy note listing each number they report, with a switch to turn those reports off.
1. Personal data we collect
Information you give us
- The design partner form, on the homepage and on the demos. Your name, work email address, company if you give it, what you are building, and which page you sent it from.
- Email. Your address and whatever you write, when you write to us.
- Names and chat on the demos. On the demos where you can take a turn, you can enter a display name, and some have chat. The name you enter and your messages are shown to everyone on that demo at that moment. We never ask for your real name to watch, play or chat, so use one only if you want to. If you enter no name, one is made up for you.
- What you do on a demo. Your presses and keystrokes while driving are sent to the machine you are driving (a game, a computer or an excavator), and everyone watching can see the result. We do not record them. On the remote computer demo, anything you type is visible to other viewers while you type it, and the computer is wiped between drivers. Do not enter passwords or anything personal.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs. Our website host and database provider record standard request metadata (IP address, request path, response code, timestamp, user agent) under their own retention policies, to run and protect their services. Our own demo servers do not write visitors' IP addresses to their logs. They hold an address in memory for moments at a time, to limit abuse and to work out a rough region.
- Stream quality numbers on the demos. While you watch, the page reports how the stream played every 30 seconds and when you leave: how far behind live it was, frame timing, stalls, sound glitches, how the picture was decoded and drawn, your browser and major version, operating system, device class, rough region (country, or state in the US), which demo, and how long you stayed. The numbers are anonymous. They carry no name, no chat, no cookie and no ID that lasts beyond the page, and your IP address is not stored with them. The demos' privacy note lets you turn them off, and they are not sent at all if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track.
- A random browser ID on the demos you play. A random ID kept in your browser, so a turn, a name and chat moderation stay with you across a reload. We store only a hash of it, with your name, your turns and scores on that demo.
- Diagnostics, only if you open a link for them. A test link we might give you reports details of your device and session. Normal visits do not.
Usage analytics
nearglass.com runs no usage analytics today. If that changes we will update this page first.
Cookies and similar technologies
We don't set advertising cookies or use third-party tracking pixels. The website sets no cookies. In your browser's own storage it keeps only the time you last sent the design partner form, so a double click does not send it twice, and your light or dark choice on the docs. The demos keep the random browser ID and your chosen name in the same way. If you turn off stream quality numbers, one cookie holding only the word "off" carries that choice across our demo sites. It exists only while you have them off.
What we don't collect
We don't sell your personal data, and we don't enrich your email address with data brokers. We don't fingerprint your device, and we don't keep what you typed while driving.
2. How we use personal data
- To reply to design partner requests and messages you send us.
- To run the demos: turns, queues, names, chat and its moderation.
- To measure and improve how the stream plays, from the anonymous numbers.
- To detect and prevent abuse of our forms and infrastructure.
- To operate, maintain, and improve the Service.
- To comply with applicable law and respond to lawful requests.
3. Sharing and disclosure
Service providers
We share personal data with vendors who process it on our behalf and only on our instructions:
- Supabase, Inc. Managed Postgres database holding design partner requests, in US East.
- Vercel, Inc. Hosts nearglass.com and serves its requests. See Vercel's Privacy Policy.
- DigitalOcean, LLC. Hosts the demo servers, in the United States.
- The Constant Company, LLC (Vultr). Hosts the video encoder for a demo, in the United States.
- Google LLC. Google Workspace carries email sent to our nearglass.com addresses.
Business transfers
If Nearglass is acquired or sells assets, your personal data may transfer to a successor. If we hold your email address, we'll notify you before any new entity becomes responsible for your data.
Legal disclosure
We may disclose personal data when required by law, to protect our rights, to investigate fraud, or to protect the safety of any person.
4. Data retention
- Design partner requests and messages are retained for two years, unless we are working together and need them for longer.
- Names, chat messages, scores and the hash of your browser ID on the demos are deleted 30 days after that browser was last on the demo. Names on the NanoRC demo are kept only while you are on the page. The moderation log, which can hold a name and a message, is deleted after 30 days.
- Stream quality numbers are deleted after 30 days. What stays are totals, such as the typical delay per browser or region, which cannot be traced to a visit.
You can request earlier deletion at any time; see §6.
5. Security
We use industry-standard technical and organizational safeguards, including encryption in transit, encryption at rest in our database, and scoped access controls. The public can add a design partner request but cannot read one.
Responsible disclosure. Security researchers acting in good faith should email hello@nearglass.com. We commit to acknowledging reports within 72 hours and not pursuing legal action against researchers who follow responsible-disclosure practices.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Export a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Delete your data.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Opt out of any future sale or sharing of your data (we don't do either today).
Email andrew@nearglass.com with your request and we'll respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity before acting. We hold no name for the anonymous stream numbers, so we cannot find one person's in them.
California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
California residents have all rights listed above, plus the right to designate an authorized agent. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as defined under the CCPA.
7. International transfers
Personal data submitted from outside the United States is transferred to servers in the United States for processing. Where required by law, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses to cover the transfer.
8. EEA / UK residents (GDPR)
Controller
Ground Plane Studio, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company. We do not currently have an establishment in the EEA or UK.
Lawful basis for processing
- Design partner requests and messages: steps taken at your request before entering into an agreement with you, and performance of a request you have made (Article 6(1)(b)).
- Names, chat and turns on the demos: performance of a request you have made (Article 6(1)(b)).
- Stream quality numbers, detecting abuse and complying with law: legitimate interests and legal obligation (Article 6(1)(f) and 6(1)(c)).
Your GDPR rights
In addition to §6, you have the right to:
- Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.
- Restrict or object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. UK: ico.org.uk. EEA: see edpb.europa.eu.
Automated decision-making
We do not make decisions about you using solely automated processing that produces legal or similarly significant effects. A chat line that enough people report is hidden automatically until a person looks at it.
9. Children
Nearglass is not directed to people under 16. If we learn we have collected personal data from a child without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it.
10. Do Not Track
The demos honor Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track: if your browser sends either, no stream quality numbers are sent or recorded. We do not perform cross-site tracking anywhere.
11. Updates to this policy
We'll update this page when our practices change and revise the "Last updated" date above.
